SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Plattsburgh freshman goalkeeper Lilla Nease (Lake Forest, CA) has been selected the Northeast Women's Hockey League's Rookie of the Week.
The honor is for games contested from Monday, Nov. 25, through Sunday, Dec. 1, and was announced by the NEWHL on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
Although freshmen dominate the typical rookie of the week award, any player competing in their first season of intercollegiate athletics is eligible for the honor.
Nease played to a 1-0-0 record with 36 saves, a 0.64 goals against average and a .973 save percentage on the week.
She began the week with 25 saves and a .962 save percentage after backstopping No. 1 Plattsburgh to a 3-1 win over No. 7 University of Wisconsin-River Falls as part of the Panther/Cardinal Classic on Saturday, Nov. 30, in Middlebury, Vt.
Nease then stopped all 11 shots she faced while playing 34:14 in relief against No. 2 Middlebury in the championship game of the Panther/Cardinal Classic on Sunday, Dec. 1.
Against UW-River Falls, Plattsburgh won its 26th consecutive game to set the NCAA Division III women's ice hockey record for longest overall winning streak.
The streak, which ended against Middlebury, began with a 6-0 win over Buffalo State on Jan. 12, 2019, and included the Cardinals winning their fifth national title in six seasons (seventh overall).
Plattsburgh set the previous record when it won 25 consecutive games from Feb. 7, 2015 to Jan. 4, 2016.
